Subject: Towing with a Peugeot 308 1.6HDI Author: Kevin Date: February 02, 2010 at 15:03
Hi,
I have a Peugeot 308 1.6HDi (90BHP).
Does anyone have any experience of towing a caravan with this vehicle/engine?
The caravan is quite lightweight (Elddis Avante 475 1049kg MIRO).
My gut feeling is that the car is under powered, but, would appreciate the feedback form anyone who has got experience.
Cheers

Hi Kevin.
No personal experience, but a colleague had a Peugeot 308 as per your spec as a company car and eventually up-rated his own family car for an Octavia 1.9 as the 308 wasn't any good for his van (a 4 berth Bailey I think).
The MIRO you've quoted isn't much use to me as this is un-laden weight; I'd be more interested in the MTPLM of your van but the 308 having what seems a generous max tow weight, the 85% guide suggests a match at about 1170kgs towing weight (I've averaged between the 3 and 5 door 308).
The maximum tow-ball weight is a paltry 61kgs too, so you'd need to exercise caution when loading the van too.

Hi Paul,
Thanks very much for the help. We are new to caravanning and have just bought the Elddis.
We have the 308 as a company car too and the spec does suggest a very generous towing capacity. I have towed previously, although not a caravan, so I do have some experience.
The MLPTM quoted for the van is 1260Kg so the Peugeot is pushing the 90% ratio.
But, our other car is a petrol C-Max which can only pull 1200kg, so not an option, and having just paid for the van, there is little scope for changing the C-Max.
I have checked the combination on the outfit checker, which gives a 2.5 star rating overall. But it does score mainly 3 stars except for Top Speed (which I am happy to live with as we won't be going too far). My main concern is that the report states that there is probably enough power for hill starts?
Cheers
Kev

Hi Kevin.
Presume you mean not enough power for hill starts...
Had a quick chat with my colleague today who did confirm he was happy'ish with the 308 for relatively local touring, bug as he got the bug for further ventures had no choice but upgrade the family car. Hill starts wouldn't be to great, but I'm sure you won't be driving up the Eiger, so with reasonable fore-thought you should be ok.
Shame the C-Max is restrictive, I'd prefer to tow with that but presume yours is a petrol at that weight.
