Subject: jerking

Can anyone tell me why my car is jerking when towing a horse trailer (sorry not a caravan but same principle!)? This is whether it has horses on or not - so it is not the weight or the horses moving.

I have tried a different trailer and it does the same - whcih seems to lead me to believe it is the car. It is a '55 reg Mercedes ML270 - which should comfortably tow an emppty (and full!) horse trailer.

It feels jerky, as though the trailer comes up in front and tries to sort of buckle? Happens more down hill and on the flat then up hill. Happens more on deceleration but still does it on acceleration. the trailer is brand new and someone checked the hitch by pushing it back and said there wasn't much give so it wasn't the trailer.

any ideas?

Hi, If it's happening downhill then it's possible that the trailers braking system is set too sensetive.
This can be solved by backing it off a bit and testing it again adjusting the brakes until they are smoother.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Paul.
