i have just purchased a Golf 2ltr DCI to tow my small Eldis Mistral after selling my nissan xtrail .
My xtrail only gave me 31 mph when towing this was to expensive but sadly my Golf is no better, it has gone back to the workshop for a check over, i purchased it on the reading of articles in a caravan club mag they said this was an excellent model to buy for towing. Have i been to hasty.

The Golf has indeed be highly praised in UK caravanning magazines and is claimed to be an excellent towcar.
I'm not surprised by your MPG though to be fair; although you mention the van as being small, don't mistake this with permitting good economy when towing as you need to factor in effect of drag too.
I've just read a review on another forum from a user claiming an average of 32mpg in his 2.0 Golf estate, so maybe a comparable figure?
